Nathan Ashmore believes Boreham Wood can pick themselves up and challenge for promotion again next season following their play-off heartache.
Ashmore’s superb season between the sticks was recognised this week as he picked up Reusch Goalkeeper of the Year at the Non-League Paper’s National Game Awards in association with Isuzu.
The shot-stopper conceded just 40 goals all season and played a key role in leading the tightest defence in the Vanarama National League.
The Wood missed out on promotion to the Football League, falling to a last-gasp 3-2 defeat against Notts County in the play-off semi-finals, but the gloveman is backing his side to bounce back.
“It has been a good season, so hopefully I can build on it personally and as a team we can go one better next year,” said Ashmore.
“These are exciting times and I just hope that we can keep building and keep working hard.
“This is my first time being invited to the National Game Awards and it is an honour to be here.
“It is a shame that we could not make it over the final hurdle but the whole season as a collective has been brilliant, both as a team and personally.”
Ashmore helped the Wood go on a run of five consecutive clean sheets between February and March.
And the 33-year-old, who quit a job in a Portsmouth Nando’s in 2016 while playing for Gosport Borough to pursue his full-time footballing dreams, will continue to push himself over the summer.
He added: “Nothing really changes heading into next season.
“I will just continue doing what I am doing and just keep building for next season.
“We want to go up next season and that will be the main focus, but I will just try to keep keeping clean sheets to help the team.
“The likes of Notts County and Wrexham have obviously blown this league up completely, so I think it is a level playing field next season.
“Anybody can win it next year, which makes it even more exciting and compelling to watch.”
