Welsh teenager Viktor Frydrych put nerves aside to claim his first Wimbledon win.
The 17-year old from Colwyn Bay made his All England Club debut last year but lost in straight sets to American Sebastian Gorzny .
However, against Australian left-hander Charlie Camus, Frydrych overcame his jitters in two tight sets to win 7-5 7-6(4). He will now face either American seed Darwin Blanch or Czech youngster Petr Brunclik in the second round.
“Playing last year really helped me, to be honest I didn’t think I was ready at the time but it meant nothing was new this year,” said Frydrych, who trains at LTA’s National Academy at Stirling.
“I’m really relieved and proud of myself to win my first Wimbledon match, it was pretty nervy out there but I got the job done.
“I’ve returning well and playing well from the back of the court but that wasn’t working for me. I had to risk a lot of my first serve as I wasn’t confident. I had to find the key moments when he lost focus and I was just more solid.”
Frydrych is currently ranked 162nd in the ITF world junior rankings but had the ideal preparation for SW19 by reaching the final four of warm-up junior event in Roehampton last week.
“I don’t think too much about rankings, I think how I played at Roehampton proved that,” he added.
“I feel ready for Wimbledon and I honestly believe that I can do well this year, even though I’ve another year as a junior next year too.
“I put a bit too much pressure on myself after how I did in Roehampton, I need to remember that I’m still the underdog and I can’t let too much get into my head.
“When I’m nervous I jump at my shots and get a bit tight and that is something to work on before the next match.”
