In 1986, Hackney Women’s FC became the first fully women-run and openly lesbian football team in the UK.
Since its establishment, the club has championed inclusivity, creating a safe space for all women with a passion for football.
Despite being a trailblazer in women’s football and leaving a lasting impact, Hackney Women’s relies primarily on membership fees.
First-team captain Kate said: “It holds such a poignant place in people’s lives.
“It’s not just the space where people come and play football,” highlighting how the club fosters lifelong friendships and provides a platform for personal growth.
To meet the growing demand for safe spaces in football, those at the club advocate for greater financial support for amateur clubs and the vital spaces they create.
