A recent investigation has suggested many Londoners fail to grasp the three Rs – reduce, reuse, recycle.
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has found that five out of the top ten areas with the worst recycling rates in England are in London.
The study revealed that all the areas had a recycling rate of less than 25%, with the collected household rate for all being over 250kg.
Tower Hamlets, with only 17.7% of household waste being sent for reuse, recycling or composting, came out as the worst area in the country at recycling.
This was followed closely by Liverpool City Council with a recycling rate of 17.9% and Barrow-in-Furness Borough Council stealing third place with a rate of 18%.
Ross Jones, Director of Enviro Homes Renewables said : “It’s clear from this data that some councils also need to do more, especially with the selection of large cities and highly populated London boroughs that appear on the list as well.”
Despite imploring councils to do more, Jones added: “There are ways individuals can minimise their household waste by a lot but it’s a group effort at the end of the day to ensure that this makes a difference.”
Thus, it is evident that it is vital for communities to collaborate and cooperate to improve recycling rates across the country in order to pave the way for a sustainable and environmentally friendly future.
