The team at Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park in Mile End are offering foraging courses to engage the public in the natural world.
Foraging has seen a surge in popularity in recent years, with over 300 foraging requests in the park in 2023 alone.
The Mile End park has also seen a rise in illegal foraging – particularly for wild garlic.
They have caught people stealing wild garlic for personal use, for the restaurant trade and to sell online; fines for this behaviour can be as much as £5,000.
Despite this, the team wants to encourage foraging as a way to highlight the biodiversity they have spent 23 years developing.
They offer monthly foraging classes between April and October, to help teach people the basics of foraging so they can do it safely and without causing too much damage to the plant life.
