Brand new Lido in east London gets planning permission

London is set to have its first new Lido in decades after plans were recently approved by Redbridge Councils Planning Committee.

The pool will be in Valentines Park in East London, the site of a previous Lido (1923 to 1995).

Construction should begin later this year, and it will be built very closely to where the original outdoor pool that once thrived 29 years ago lived.

Corporate director of regeneration and culture Mark Baigent said: “The old Lido in Valentines Park holds a special place in the hearts of local people. It is where families enjoyed idyllic summer days right on their doorsteps and it is so exciting that after nearly 30 years, a brand-new lido and more will be introduced in the park for people to visit and create new special memories.”

The open-air swimming pool is set to open to the public in autumn of 2025 and according to the council will include the following facilities: A 25 metre pool with six lanes, a children’s splash pad, a gym and dance/exercise studio, changing rooms, a picnic area, a car park, a cafe and even a meeting room.

The new facility will showcase the council’s commitment to sustainability. It will use technology like solar panels to generate energy, air-source heat pumps, water recycling systems, and energy-efficient lighting. These features will ensure that the lido is cost efficient, environmentally and economically friendly.
