An east London charity that develops accessible instruments for disabled people showcased its work at an interactive event in Hackney.
DMLab, part of Drake Music, hosted musicians, developers and academics at Graeae Theatre to discuss the barriers in the music industry and try out a range of cutting edge, bespoke instruments.
North East Londoner caught up with Rob Parton, Project Manager at DMLab, and Geo Aghinea, a deaf musician, to find out more.
In a survey conducted by Drake Music in 2020 in partnership with other music organisations, more than half of participants (57%) said their choice of instrument was dictated by their disability.
More than one in four (27%) said their instrument did not have an adapted feature but could benefit from one.
DMLab runs events every other month in different venues across London.
