Many Londoners are familiar with the fact that two of its best-loved bagel shops are on the very same street, Brick Lane, and that both operate 24 hours, seven days a week.
But Beigel Shop – nicknamed ‘The Yellow One’ – holds the record for being Brick Lane’s oldest bagel bakery.
Established in 1855, the shop has served traditional beigels to London’s East End for more than a century-and-a-half, and has been passed down by generations to its current ownership, with the recipe remaining intact.
We speak to its current manager, Ashley Zelman, to find out about the history of this local institution, what it’s like operating a round-the-clock bakery, and what he hopes for the future of Beigel Shop.
And if you fancy trying a bagel from The Beigel Shop – from the popular salt beef, to the classic salmon and cream cheese – visit 155 Brick Ln, London, E1 6SB.
