The cult of Taylor Swift hits London

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour has hit London cinemas, and Swifties have pulled out all of the stops to celebrate its release.

The screenings are unlike any other film, breaking all cinema rules with fans are standing up, singing and dancing during the nearly three-hour long concert film.

Fans all over the country dress up and hand out friendship bracelets during the screening, a tradition usually done at Swift’s concerts.

However, some showings are tamer than others, with fans collecting at the front of the cinemas and dancing around to which some people online are comparing to a cult.

Swift’s fans are known to be generally chaotic, obsessive and having a no holding back approach to defending their favourite musician.

It seems fans over in the US take their feelings to the next level, as can be seen from their cinema behaviour:

Promotional eras tour cups and popcorn buckets also caused a rave fan reaction, with cinemas selling out on the first day of screening, as well as some fans cherishing the novelties like treasure.

The Vue cinema lobby in Leicester Square played tracks from her entire music catalogue throughout the day, working as a prelude into the concert film experience.

Speaking to one employee, who was a fan herself, they said: “We like to encourage people to sing along and dance as long as they’re being respectful of others.

“The film is great for business, and everyone here is grateful for the fans, and I think some of my colleagues who weren’t fans before are even starting to enjoy the music.”

Swift’s performance and director Sam Wrench combined to create the highest grossing concert movie of all time with an estimated $95 million to $97 million worldwide on its opening weekend alone.
