Many disabled attendees were left disappointed as they voiced their concerns on how MCM’s disability access fell short this year at Comic Con London despite attempts made by MCM to improve accessibility.
MCM Comic Con was back again at ExCel London in Newham this passing October on the weekend of 27-29.
The event is a celebration of all things pop-culture, including but not limited to Movies, Tv Shows, Comics, Manga, Anime, Video-games, merchandise, pop-ups, celebrity panels and autographs and much more.
Although the event is supposed to be a celebration of all-things pop culture where attendees gather for a whole weekend and cosplay their favourite characters and meet like-minded individuals with similar interests, disabled attendees of the event felt like their experience at the event was negatively affected by the shortcomings of the disability facilities for the weekend.
A spokesperson for MCM said: “We recognise that improving our accessibility program is an ongoing effort, and we are proud of the progress we made so far this year which is reflected in positive fan feedback both onsite and in the weeks since our October event.
“Following feedback from previous events, we made dramatic changes to our accessibility program at MCM London this October including improved entrance procedures, additional seating throughout the venue, expanded walkways, more quiet rooms and a dedicated accessibility helpline for fans to reach out to MCM staff directly if needed.
“We encourage any MCM fans who did encounter problems at the show to get in touch with our team so that their experiences can shape further improvements going forward.
“We will be working closely with the community and our consultants to review all feedback, and we look forward to incorporating those learnings as the team prepares for our 2024 events.”
Here is what some disabled attendees had to say about the accessibility of the event:
MCM Comic Con London takes place twice every year, once in the Summer (May) and once in Autumn (October) and the next one is set to take place in May 2024.
